Here at Angels PC Clinic we know all too well what it’s like when you get a new computer and the overwhelming thought of setting the thing up.  There’s a lot to do.

That is why here at Angels, all our laptops, netbooks and desktops are already setup so all you need to do is take it home, plug it in and get on with what you need to do.

This takes that stress away from you.  We spend a good 3-4 hours on getting everything in place, updates, extra software ie Office compatible software, PDF software and so on.  This also allows us to do a quality control check on everything before it leaves our shop.

We can also transfer over all your personal files ie photo’s, documents, music, video’s, at the same time making a copy onto a memory stick if you want a back up too.

Home Visits can also be arranged to make the swap over from an old computer to a new one as easy as possible.  Setup with printers, wifi and anything else that is required.

LET US TAKE THE STRESS AWAY – pop into the shop, call us on 01227 638233 or email us, with your own situation and we can suggest a solution for you.  It’s what we do – and we love to help and make it as simple as possible

Please get in touch if you need any further information, advice or wish to book a Home Visit.

So the much awaited Windows 10 is imminent, 29th July in fact.  So what’s it all about?

undecided voter concept

If you hate Windows 8, chances are your mind is already made up about Windows 10 – and not in a good way.

And that’s a shame.

There’s still no reason to hate Windows 8, and Windows 10 fixes some of the most common complaints that Windows 8 generated.

I’ve downloaded a Developers copy (not advisable unless you know the consequences) on my Windows 7 desktop at work and I am going to attempt to explain what changes have been made, what you need to be aware of and anything I feel is important to know.

Here we go:

1. How much is Windows 10? Windows 10 is FREE – for life. That’s the first thing. BUT, it’s only free for the first year. After that, Microsoft will be making a one-off charge, only if you haven’t taken up the offer of downloading it in the first year. It could be in the region of £85 depending on your version.

2. Who can download Windows 10? From what we know already, those with Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 will be able to download Windows 10. Those with a Surface, Surface 2 and RT flavours will not be able to take advantage of Windows 10 although Microsoft say that some features from Windows 10 will be available in an update to Windows RT sometime in the future. Windows 8 users must first install 8.1 before intalling 10.

Windows XP or Windows Vista Your (probably very old) PC is not automatically eligible for a free Windows 10 upgrade. However, it may qualify if you upgraded to a later Windows version. For example, if you bought a £50 Windows 8 upgrade from Microsoft in the months after Windows 8 was first released and used that license and product key on your machine, you qualify for a free upgrade.

3. Will my printer work with Windows 10?

Before Windows 10 installs, it will run a check on all your hardware and software and provide you with a list of what will work and what won’t. With printers, it would be advisable to visit the maker’s website for their plans.

Windows 10 Information

Microsoft have announced that Windows 10, the new version of their operating system, will be released on 29 July 2015. This will be a free upgrade for current users of Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1 devices.

We are currently determining our driver support for this new operating system and
this page will be updated with further information shortly.

4. If I upgrade to Windows 10 and don’t like it, can I go back to my previous
Windows version?
This is a tricky one. When Windows 10 is installed, the recovery partition becomes
inoperable. If you have made your recovery discs, great, if not, maybe now’s the time
to make them. This will be the only way to go back to your previous operating system.

5. I’ve installed Microsoft Office (Word, Excel etc), will I lose it and what versions will work with Windows 10?
Programs that run on Windows 8 and 8.1 should work in 10. Microsoft Office 2007 onwards uses the file extension .docx, therefore these versions should work with Windows 10. Microsoft Office 2003 uses the file extension .doc so although Office 2003 may work, you will still be saving your files in the *.doc format. When sending a *.doc file to someone say by email, if the recipient has a new version of office than your Office 2003, they should be able to open it. The problem usually arises when someone sends a newer version, ie Office 2007/2010/2013 using the *.docx format, to someone with the older Office 2003. You can download a converter for when this happens.

6. What happened to Windows 9?
There was never a Windows 9, Microsoft skipped this number and went to 10 instead. Company officials decided to choose 10 because they believe this release is a ‘Perfect 10’ and to also signify this is the last major release of Windows.

7. Does Windows 10 require a Touch Screen?
No, Windows 10 works just fine with mouse and keyboard. If you have a standard
LCD or CRT monitor, it works just fine with that too.

8. Can I do a clean install using the Free upgrade?
No, it will require that you are running a previous qualifying version and start the
upgrade from within the qualifying version. You can initiate a clean install after
completing the Upgrade.

9. I play Hearts and use Windows Media Center, will I be able to use these
on Windows 10?

No to both. Windows 10 does not come with Hearts but can be found in the
App Store. Windows Media Center will not be available.

Well, I hope you’ve found this informative and has helped in understanding a little
more about what is on the horizon. Remember though, Microsoft can change the
goal posts at any time!!!!

Julie, at Angels PC Clinic

Winter is in the air!!!

Kids are back at school, grandkids too for that matter.
Now is a good time to get your computers Winter-Cleaned.

Happens to me too

I have two grown up son’s still living at home. When their girlfriends/friends come to visit there can be up to 8 people in the house, all vying to use the computer.  Even WE have problems with google going missing, pop ups covering the screen, programs wanting to run and all manner of things.  So if we encounter problems, I’m sure you do too.

So why does your computer need a Spring Clean / Healthcheck?

Like the oil required in a car to make things run smoothly, your computer needs regular attention too.  Over time things get clogged up, installs/uninstalls leave their mark, spyware/malware may be bothering you with adverts to “Make Your PC Go Faster”, which in fact do the exact opposite.  Also it’s good to have your hardware checked, better to be aware of possible hard drive failure BEFORE it happens.  (Have you done a backup??)

Remember when..

you first bought your computer and it was running all lovely and fast and everything was dandy?! Compare it to now.  We can get it back up to running faster again.  We can also advise on backup options, upgrades and purchases.

So what happens next?

  1. We can collect from you / repair / and return. (available Whitstable/Herne Bay area’s)
  2. You can bring the computer to us and we will ring you once ready for collection. (we are in Swalecliffe opposite the Railway Station)
  3. Remote Session – stay where you are and we will securely connect to your computer, fix the problem then disconnect. (available Worldwide)

If you are not sure which type of assistance you require just Give Us A Call.
