The announcement from Microsoft
Microsoft sent the following message to email addresses accessed using Windows Live Mail 2012:
“Dear User,
Earlier this year we introduced a new Outl‍ook‍.‍com that will help you collaborate with others, focus on what matters, and get more done. The new Outlo‍ok‍.‍com delivers an exciting set of new experiences across web, phone, and desktop, and we’re eager for you to start using it.
It appears that you are currently using Windows Live Mail 2012 to connect to your Out‍look‍.‍com account. Windows Live Mail 2012 does not support the synchronization technologies used by the new Outl‍ook‍.‍com. When account upgrades begin at the end of June, you will no longer be able to receive email sent to your Out‍look‍.‍com account in Windows Live Mail 2012. Rest assured, you can always access your email by logging into Out‍look‍.‍com from any web browser, and you will continue to have access to all your data that is currently in Windows Live Mail 2012”.

The message continues, offering the following alternatives in addition to Outlook.com web access:
Switch to the Windows Mail app in Windows 8, 8.1, and 10.
Upgrade to Windows 10, if you need to, so you can get the Windows Mail app.
A free one-year subscription to Office 365 so as to get Outlook 2016, the desktop email program. (Presumably, after that year, normal subscription charges would apply for Office 365.)
And there’s a deadline: June 30th, 2016.

Angels thoughts : there is another program that can be used called Thunderbird. We use that here for all our email accounts and works flawlessly. It can be downloaded from HERE.

Remote Support – Charges and Terms and Conditions
We are so very pleased to be able to offer you this great service. No more dragging your computer down to the shop, sometimes in awful weather and also when the shop is closed and you need help QUICK. We hope you enjoy using this service and tell all your friends and family.

REFER A FRIEND
Get extra minutes by referring a friend. For every friend you refer we will add 10 minutes to your total minutes. Add 2 friends and we will add 20 minutes and so forth.

O.A.P. DEALS
For those over the wonderful age of 65 (includes both male and female) an extra 10, 20 or 30 minutes will be added to their plan dependent on which one they sign up for; 2 hours, 3 hours or 4 hours.

GIFT VOUCHERS
Struggling to find a unique gift for a family member or friend. Buy them some time. For each voucher purchased minutes will be added to your plan as in the Refer a Friend scheme.

Terms and Conditions
    • Charges for Remote Assistance must be paid in full before the first session starts, unless previously agreed.
    • Payments can be made by either cash or card in the shop or by card or PayPal through www.calltheangel.com web site.
    • Non-Emergency Sessions are carried out 9.00am – 5.00pm Monday to Saturday. Emergency Sessions 5.00pm -9.00pm Monday to Saturday. “Panic” Emergency Sessions outside these hours are possible but subject to availability.
    • In all cases please send a message with a brief description of the problem to our web site www.calltheangel.com for a quick response.
    • For charges see below and after the initial 30 minute charge all sessions are charged by 10 minute increments rounded up to the next 10 minutes. We do have a special offer one year agreement for Non-Emergency assistance for one PC. For all charges please see below and the company reserves the right to vary these charges at any time.
    • When assistance is required to download lengthy programs, transfer files, installing updates, etc. taking more than 10 minutes, additional increment charges will be waived until the task has been completed but at the discretion of the Angel conducting the session.
    • On occasions during a remote assistance session and out of our control, the internet connection can be lost and no charge will be made during these periods.
    • We will take the utmost care when giving remote assistance but in the very unlikely event of any data being lost we cannot be held responsible.
    • On occasions a PC may not be suitable for remote assistance in which case if possible bring the PC to our shop and we will advise you of your best course of action.
    • Should you introduce a customer to us who has not been in touch with us before please let us know and we will send you a voucher for future “free minutes”.
    • This service is only available to computers that have an internet connection.
    Charges for Remote Assistance – Pay As You Go
    • Non-Emergency Session from 10.00am to 4.00pm Monday to Saturday is an initial charge of £35 for the first 30 minutes and thereafter at 30 min intervals.
    • Emergency Session from 5.00pm to 9.00pm Monday to Saturday is an initial charge of £50 for up to 30 minutes and thereafter at the rate of £50 per 30 minutes.
    • Panic” Emergency Session at any other time is an initial charge of £75 for up to 30 minutes and thereafter at the rate of £75 per 30 minutes.
    • Non-Emergency Session from 10.00am to 4.00pm Monday to Saturday for one year and each PC is £299.
    • All initial charges and one year Non-Emergency Sessions are paid in advance unless previously agreed.
    OR Charges for Remote Assistance – Pay Up Front – One Computer, 1 Year
    2 hours (120 mins) £90
    3 hours (180 mins) £130
    Unlimited Remote Support for one computer for 1 Year £299
    • Non-Emergency Session from 10.00am to 4.00pm Monday to Saturday. All connections are made with a minimum rate of 10 minutes.
    • Emergency Session from 5.00pm to 9.00pm Monday to Saturday – for every 10 minutes connection time, this will be doubled to 20 minutes.
    • Panic” Emergency Session at any other time – for every 10 minutes connection time, this will be trebled to 30 minutes.
    • Non-Emergency Session from 10.00am to 4.00pm Monday to Saturday for one year and each PC is £299. If assistance is required out of these hours please contact Angels PC Clinic.

Ok, so getting Windows 10 free for 7 and 8 user’s comes to an end fairly soon. What should you do??

Here at Angels PC Clinic, we’ve been putting 10 onto all our new computers and 2nd user one’s. Should we be? Yes!!!!

The way we’ve been doing it is not by using the built-in upgrade button but by installing a fresh clean copy of 10.  If you imagine bringing all that baggage with you from say 7, that’s a lot to ask of Windows 10.

So many people visit the shop and ask this question “What do you think of Windows 10”.  In a nutshell, it’s good, would I recommend they update it themselves? Not necessarily.

Like we always say, BACK UP before doing anything like this, just in case.  And if you’ve backed up then why not do a fresh clean install of Windows 10? Makes so much more sense.

If you want to go the route that we advocate but don’t want to attempt this yourself, then we can offer to do this for you.  The only possible downside to this is that any software previously installed will need to be reinstalled ie Microsoft Office, Printer software.

And on one other note, for those of you that have seen Windows 10 and are not keen on the Start Menu, this can easily be changed to look like the useful 7 version but with the option of still having the new one there also.

And by the way, if you like Windows 7, Microsoft are still supporting this until January 2020 and Windows 8 until January 2023.

It’s been quite a week at the shop.  Many people have been coming in with a ‘Blue Screen of Death’ with the message “System Thread Exception Not Handled“.

Now, I didn’t know what was causing it, all I knew was that it seemed to affect Windows 8.1. It actually can affect 8 and 8.1. I’ve been onto manufacturers  asking what was causing it.  I now have the result.

Microsoft released an update.  This was causing all these problems.  Unfortunately, when you install anything up to 260 odd updates, even 160 or so, you then sit waiting for them to install to then be told there is a problem and the whole lot has to come off again.  Very annoying and very time consuming.

I’m reading through the instructions but it’s tricky to get to the point of making the fix, especially if you are unsure of the diagnostic options available, so, unless you’d like to attempt this yourself, please call into the shop and we will sort it out for you. If you call into the shop, during opening hours, we won’t be making a charge for this fix.  Out of hours or Sundays we will unfortunately have to make a charge.
