For those who are still using Windows Vista, be prepared to jump ship: extended support for the lovable operating system is coming to an end April 11, 2017, according to Microsoft.

Microsoft’s support clock never stops ticking. Two very high-profile products will end extended support in 2017: Windows Vista’s final date for security updates is April 11, 2017, while Office 2007 support ends on October 10, 2017.

If you would like to discuss your particular situation please do call into the shop and we can run through with you your options.

Always here to help.

In every Newsletter (sign up now) we have a question at the end for you to ponder.  This is the answer to the last question –

Where did “Cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey” come from?

In the heyday of sailing ships, all war ships and many freighters carried iron cannons. Those cannons fired round iron cannon balls. It was necessary to keep a good supply near the cannon. However, how to prevent them from rolling about the deck? The best storage method devised was a square-based pyramid with one ball on top, resting on four resting on nine, which rested on sixteen. Thus, a supply of 30 cannon balls could be stacked in a small area right next to the cannon. There was only one problem…how to prevent the bottom layer from sliding or rolling from under the others. The solution was a metal plate called a ‘Monkey’ with 16 round indentations.

However, if this plate were made of iron, the iron balls would quickly rust to it. The solution to the rusting problem was to make ‘Brass Monkeys.’ Few landlubbers realize that brass contracts much more and much faster than iron when chilled.
Consequently, when the temperature dropped too far, the brass indentations would shrink so much that the iron cannonballs would come right off the monkey. Thus, it was quite literally, ‘Cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey.’ (All this time, you thought that was an improper expression, didn’t you.)

Angels PC Clinic will be closed from Saturday 24th December 2016
and reopening on Wednesday 4th January 2017.

Festive wishes to all our customers.  We have had a great year and looking
forward to the next one.

From Julie, Ryan and Nigel xx

Here at Angels PC Clinic we know all too well what it’s like when you get a new computer and the overwhelming thought of setting the thing up.  There’s a lot to do.

That is why here at Angels, all our laptops, netbooks and desktops are already setup so all you need to do is take it home, plug it in and get on with what you need to do.

This takes that stress away from you.  We spend a good 3-4 hours on getting everything in place, updates, extra software ie Office compatible software, PDF software and so on.  This also allows us to do a quality control check on everything before it leaves our shop.

We can also transfer over all your personal files ie photo’s, documents, music, video’s, at the same time making a copy onto a memory stick if you want a back up too.

Home Visits can also be arranged to make the swap over from an old computer to a new one as easy as possible.  Setup with printers, wifi and anything else that is required.

LET US TAKE THE STRESS AWAY – pop into the shop, call us on 01227 638233 or email us, with your own situation and we can suggest a solution for you.  It’s what we do – and we love to help and make it as simple as possible

Please get in touch if you need any further information, advice or wish to book a Home Visit.

It’s time for our annual holiday.  We will be away from the shop for approximately 3 weeks.  I know it’s a long time but our brains need to be rested so that we come back refreshed and ready to go again.

Our emails will be on auto-responder from midnight Monday 12th September 2016 but we will still receive them if it’s something I can help with by return of an email.

Where we are travelling to has very/extremely limited internet access so could take a few days to get back to you but we will try our hardest.

Thank you all so very much for yet another great year and upon our return we shall have a new helper in the shop, actually he will be our Apprentice, so we shall be able to take on much more work and hopefully will be an even better year ahead.

Bye for now

Julie xx

The announcement from Microsoft
Microsoft sent the following message to email addresses accessed using Windows Live Mail 2012:
“Dear User,
Earlier this year we introduced a new Outl‍ook‍.‍com that will help you collaborate with others, focus on what matters, and get more done. The new Outlo‍ok‍.‍com delivers an exciting set of new experiences across web, phone, and desktop, and we’re eager for you to start using it.
It appears that you are currently using Windows Live Mail 2012 to connect to your Out‍look‍.‍com account. Windows Live Mail 2012 does not support the synchronization technologies used by the new Outl‍ook‍.‍com. When account upgrades begin at the end of June, you will no longer be able to receive email sent to your Out‍look‍.‍com account in Windows Live Mail 2012. Rest assured, you can always access your email by logging into Out‍look‍.‍com from any web browser, and you will continue to have access to all your data that is currently in Windows Live Mail 2012”.

The message continues, offering the following alternatives in addition to web access:
Switch to the Windows Mail app in Windows 8, 8.1, and 10.
Upgrade to Windows 10, if you need to, so you can get the Windows Mail app.
A free one-year subscription to Office 365 so as to get Outlook 2016, the desktop email program. (Presumably, after that year, normal subscription charges would apply for Office 365.)
And there’s a deadline: June 30th, 2016.

Angels thoughts : there is another program that can be used called Thunderbird. We use that here for all our email accounts and works flawlessly. It can be downloaded from HERE.
